The most effective way to ensure that you're not dealing with garden pests like squirrels and hungry birds is to build a DIY strawberry cage before the fruit begins to ripen. This gives you ample time to create your strawberry box.

Choosing the Right Mesh Size

To effectively protect your strawberry patch from hungry birds and garden pests, choosing the right mesh size of netting for strawberry beds is key. Opt for a mesh that keeps away pesky critters while allowing pollinators like bees access. Mesh sizes around 1/4 inch work well with most juicy berries.

Step-by-step Guide to Building DIY Strawberry Plant CageFrame of strawberry cage

Protecting your delicious strawberries from birds and other pests can be hassle-free with a DIY netting solution that is cost-effective and customized for your garden. One of the most effective ways to protect your strawberry patch is by building a DIY strawberry plant cage.

Step One: Measuring for the Netting Solution

To ensure maximum protection, measure the length, width, and height of your area. Choose a high-quality mesh that is both durable and lightweight so that it doesn't become a hassle to lift on and off during harvest season.

Step Two: Gather Supplies to Build DIY Netting SolutionFrame of strawberry cage

When building your own DIY netting solution for your strawberry patch, you’ll want to make sure you have everything on hand. In addition to netting and cedar wood for your frame, you'll also need outdoor wood screws, a nail gun, and a staple gun with staples.

Step Three: Assemble Your DIY Strawberry Cage Frame

The most effective way to keep pests like squirrels and hungry birds away from your juicy berries is to assemble a cage-like structure with wood as its frame.

Using a miter saw, we measured and cut the cedar wood frame to size. With a nailer, we created the frame - one for the top and one for the bottom. Then, you’ll want to calculate the height of your cage (in this project the height was 8 inches).  With your nailer, make an 8-inch “L” and attach it with a nailer on all four corners of your frame. Then, drill pilot holes and using outdoor screws, screw in the top.

(Optional: Use a wood stain and an outdoor polyurethane to protect against the elements and add style.)

We selected a multi-purpose netting and cut each opening to size. Then from the inside of the box, stapled it taught with a heavy-duty stapler

Enjoying Your Strawberries with Protection

Enjoying your strawberries without any hassle requires protection from hungry birds and garden pests. Don’t forget to regularly maintain the netting by checking for tears so that it can continue to do its job of protecting your strawberries.

Additional Tips for Gardening and Pruning

Maintaining healthy strawberry plants requires regular pruning and fertilizing with high-quality soil. Additionally, mulching helps retain moisture while suppressing weed growth. Monitoring the plants for disease or pest infestations is vital to keep them healthy all growing season long.
