Most kitchen and bathroom faucets have an aerator at the end of the spout, the purpose of which is to deliver a soft, bubbly stream of water.  However, over time, aerators can become clogged with dirt, sand or other small particles that cause spitting, sputtering and a generally, unruly water flow. Clogged aerators can be replaced, but it's simple enough to just clean them.
