Popcorn ceilings, also known as cottage cheese or, more accurately, acoustic ceilings were popular in American homes from the 1950’s to the 1980’s. They were sprayed on, most often in bedrooms and hallways, and valued for their ability to absorb sound and hide imperfections. These days, many folks just don’t like them and prefer a more contemporary, smoother finish. Removing a popcorn ceiling is a fairly simple, albeit, messy, process. However, with a bit of advance preparation, the mess can be contained and disposed of quite easily. Some of these ceilings, particularly the early formulas, can contain asbestos and should be tested beforehand if you plan to take on this project yourself.
