Intermixing Stains

1

A little while ago, I took a fixture off the shop wall here and I'm left now with a patch that is bare wood.  So I want to recolor this so that it blends in. The only problem is, when I went out to pick up the stains, I couldn't find exactly the right color.  So instead, I'm going to intermix stains to create my own color.

Pick out 2 colors, I chose one that is primarily yellow and another that is primarily red.  When these mix, the stain should match my wall.  The colors you choose will depend on the color stain you are trying to match.

First, stir the stain.  Pigmented Stains always need to be stirred thoroughly because the coloring agents settle to the bottom.
Second, use a baby syringe to transfer small amounts of each stain to a mixing container.  Mix various amounts of each stain until the color looks right. I've got two parts of the more yellow stain and one part of the more red stain.

Finally, test the color by brushing on the stain in a small section then wiping it off.  Once you are happy with the color finish of the wall.
So if you can't find just the right color stain on the shelf, don't worry about it. Buy some that are close and then mix them together. The possibilities are limitless.
