More than half of all fall-related deaths occur in the home. A bathroom grab bar can help to make your home much safer, and a new mounting system from Moen lets you put a grab bar just about anywhere you want it.
To use Moen's new Secure Mount grab bar system, start by placing the bar where you want it to be installed, and trace the outline of the mounting brackets onto the wall.
Next, place the mounting plates on top of the circles you've just drawn, and trace the center holes.
| |
With an awl, make a small depression to provide a slip-proof starting point for the drill.
Using an inch-and-a-quarter hole saw, place the pilot bit on the center mark and bore a hole for each mounting bracket.
This oversized wall anchor is the key component to the Secure Mount system.

Next, attach the pull tab to the toggle,
push the toggle through the wall, allow it to flip open, and pull on the tab. As you do so, the toggle flattens out against the backside of the wallboard. The pulltab then simply unhooks.
Next, pass a bolt through the center of the mounting plate and screw it into the toggle.
| |
As the screw tightens, the plate and toggle are pulled securely together.
Now the grab bar flanges can be mounted to the plates.
Finally, snap the decorative covers in place, concealing the mounting hardware.

If you're mounting the grab bar inside a shower or tub enclosure, you may be dealing with a tile wall surface. After marking the hole locations, use a center punch to create a small depression that will keep the pilot bit from skating.
Use a carbide grit hole saw to bore through the tile.
This grab bar can support up to a 300-pound person, since the anchors spread the load across a large area on the backside of the wallboard. If your bathroom doesn't have a grab bar, no more excuses -- the job has gotten a whole lot easier! |
