How to Install a Slide-Out Pantry, Cont'd

Learn how to build and install a built-in pull-out pantry; includes plans and step-by-step instructions along with tips, materials, and tools lists.

The fixed center shelf is set in place and attached with screws.

For the slide-out shelving units to work properly, you will need a glide or slide mechanism. Create two small plywood platforms and then attach the metal glides to these. Screw the entire assembly to the bottom of the cabinet.

Once the full extension glides are attached, set the slide out panels on top, slide them into position, and screw them in place.

For added support, attach a glide to the top of each slide out as well.

6. Exterior panels
Once the slide-outs are complete, the next step is to make the exterior panel match the cabinets that are already in the kitchen, by adding decorative panels to the front.

Use a router mounted on a router table to cut bevels or tapers on the edges of the new panels. You can buy router bits that allow you to duplicate just about any profile or shape.

With all the separate parts of the decorative panels complete, assemble them together by slipping each section of the frame onto the beveled edge of the interior panel. The frame sections are glued together, but the center panel is left free to "float" so that it can expand and contract with changes in humidity. Clamp the frame in place while the glue dries.

7. Refrigerator enclosure
Like the pantry, the refrigerator enclosure is also made of birch plywood and held together with glue and the pocket hole joinery. Basically, it is no more than a large box into which the refrigerator will be placed.

To match the slide-out section, attach a solid wood face frame to conceal the front edge of the plywood.

8. Install new pantry
Set the pantry in place and attach it to the wall studs, then ease the refrigerator enclosure into position and attach it to both the pantry and the wall. There should be only a fraction of an inch to spare when you roll the new fridge snugly into place.

All that remains is a little more sanding, some priming, and a good paint job.

In the new pantry, the shelves are completely adjustable and there is not one cubic inch of space that isn't usable.
